Laid-up Knee Hooks
 |
I began by laying 'glass
on a plastic bucket covered with plastic wrap as a mold release. The
lay up is 1/8" thick, 7 or 8 layers of 6oz glass, colored grey to match
the foam I will use. Thank You! John Schroeder, for the idea!
|
I cut the blank in two
on the bandsaw, and transfered a pattern that I came up with by trial
and error while sitting in the boat on the garage floor.
After cutting the hooks out on my bandsaw, I glued them to the deck with thickened epoxy.
I covered the hooks with a 1/2" layer of minicell foam, glued with contact cement.

The finished modifcation. I wish that I had used darker foam!...Oh well! Off to learn how to roll! |

A Carved Foam Seat
 |
I started out with an
outline of the important features, The seat area and the places that it
touches the cockpit and hip braces. |
| At first I used a Stanley curved surform tool. This proved to be too slow, so .... |
 |
 |
..I switched to POWER TOOLS!!! The right angle drill sports a norton paint prep disc, a soft, but moderatly aggressive abrasive.
The grinder has a 50 grit sanding disc. The drill was a lot less scary than the grinder was!!
I smoothed the rough edges with the surform, followed by hand sanding with 60 grit then 100 grit paper.
|
The finished seat! I
beveled the seat bottom to match the hull shape, and cut out the area
where the seat contacts the hip braces. The whole project took about 2
hours and cost about $20.
The back band is from Newfound Woodworks. |
